New Seating Coming to Corner Brook Pepsi Centre Annex

The Corner Brook Pepsi Centre Annex will have new bleachers in the near future with the support of a $15,000 grant through the Provincial Government's Community Capital Grant Program.

Provincial Government provides $140,000 for Climate Change Education

Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador received $140,000 from the Provincial Government to continue public education programming through the Climate Change Education Centre, the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, announced today.

"I congratulate everyone involved with the Climate Change Education Centre on its success and innovation in delivering public education programs in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Hedderson. "This funding will lead to even more enhanced programming to educate our students on the complex subject of climate change."

Multi-Materials Stewardship Board - Industry Leaders Take the Stage at Organic Waste Management Conference

Today, the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation and Minister Responsible for the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB), welcomed more than 150 delegates, including 25 experts and innovators from across North America, to Earth Bound 2013 - Organic Waste Management Conference.

"Earth Bound 2013 is an important and timely forum for businesses, municipalities and environmental stewards to engage in discussions and explore sustainable solutions to manage organic waste," said Minister Hedderson. "Our government is committed to helping identify viable options to divert organic waste from our landfills as we continue to advance the implementation of a modern waste management system in Newfoundland and Labrador."

Province Launches Population Growth Strategy Community Workshop Consultations

To support a plan to help Newfoundland and Labrador seize the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, reverse current demographic trends, and engage the people of the province on possible solutions, the Provincial Government announced a series of public community workshop consultations today to develop the Provincial Population Growth Strategy.

As highlighted in the 2013 Speech from the Throne, the Provincial Government established the Workforce Development and Productivity Secretariat to ensure labour market policies address increasing labour, skills and demographic challenges and opportunities. Given the strong connection between the labour market and population, discussion from the consultations will also contribute to the creation of a Workforce Development Strategy to inform the approach of the Workforce and Productivity Development Secretariat.

Nine Rare Species Added Under Province's Endangered Species Act

In an effort to conserve and protect rare plants and lichen, the Provincial Government has added nine species under the Endangered Species Act as either endangered or threatened, the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conversation, announced today.

Ocean Technology Branch Wins Prestigious International Award

The Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development's Ocean Technology Branch was awarded the prestigious Compass International Award for 2013 at the OCEANS '13 MTS/IEEE conference, held this week in San Diego, California.

The Compass International Award is presented for outstanding achievement in the advancement of ocean technology and is granted by the Marine Technology Society (MTS). Awards are presented to individuals, companies and MTS groups who have shown exemplary contributions to the society or within their industries. The award is sponsored by Compass Publications, Lockheed Martin, and Ocean News and Technology.

In Corner Brook, students from St. Peter's Academy and Immaculate Heart of Mary attended the Day in the Park event with conservation officers. Inmates and staff at the Bishop's Falls Correctional Centre are lending a helping hand to the Action Community in Exploits (A.C.E.) Continuing Investments Support Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership

A special ceremony held today at the Lawrence O'Brien Arts Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay highlighted the continuing success of the Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership. The partnership was formed in 2009 to enhance the education, training and skill levels of three Aboriginal groups in Labrador to maximize their participation in the Lower Churchill Project and other resource projects.
