Provincial Government Announces Appointments to C.A. Pippy Park Commission

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced six new appointments to the board of directors of C.A. Pippy Park Commission.

Sean Kelly has been appointed chair of the commission, while Pamela Pippy will serve as vice-chairperson. Jerry English will act as the land owners and residents representative, while Stephanie Curran, Rick Gill and Sarah Stoodley will be members at large. Sheilagh O’Leary, Deputy Mayor, City of St. John’s, is the city’s appointed representative; and Anne Browne is Memorial University’s representative.

The C. A. Pippy Park Commission is a Tier 1 entity under the Independent Appointments Commission Act. Encompassing a 3,400 acre land reserve, the commission is responsible for maintaining and managing one of Canada’s largest parks, as well as a nature conservation and recreation area.

Appointments made to agencies, boards and commissions are done through a merit-based process established by the Independent Appointments Commission Act. Biographical information for board members is available in the backgrounder below.

BACKGROUNDER

Biographies for New Members of C.A. Pippy Park Commission

Stephanie Curran has extensive experience as an engineer and project manager for technical design and construction projects. Ms. Curran holds a Masters in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia, and is an active member of the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL).

Gerald (Jerry) English is a lifelong resident of Pippy Park, and is a representative of the landowners and residents association. He holds a Masters in Earth Sciences, and is an active member of the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL).

Derrick (Rick) Gill is co-founder and principal consultant of Strategic Concepts, a professional services and consulting company that provides economic and strategic planning services to resource developers. Mr. Gill is also the past director and fundraising chair of numerous charities, including the Healthcare Foundation, Heart and Stroke Foundation and Canadian Red Cross.

Sean Kelly has a diverse public service background spanning 30 years in the areas of environmental protection and conservation, health care program development, offshore oil and gas and workplace safety. He is the recipient of several prestigious national public relations awards, and holds a Masters degree from Memorial University in Political Science.

Pamela Pippy previously served as the Pippy Family representative on the commission for several years. In this role, she helped keep the legacy of the park intact, to serve its users and inhabitants in a responsible and environmentally sensitive manner. Ms. Pippy is a past campaign cabinet member for the Rainbow Riders ‘Raise It Up’ campaign and served on the construction committee for the project, is a past Chair of MUN Botanical Garden and has served on many charitable boards. She is a landscape designer and is a founding member of Landscape Newfoundland and Labrador.

Sarah Stoodley is the senior digital manager for Johnson Insurance/RSA Canada, leading the company’s digital change program across Canada. She is a passionate, dedicated professional who holds a Masters of Arts from Memorial University.
