The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced $71,000 for nine Regional Visitor Information Centres located around the province. This funding builds upon the $1.2 million investment made by the Provincial Government to the eight Provincial Information Centres, including Deer Lake Airport and St. John’s Airport which are open year round.
This funding will help facilitate the development of tourism experiences, services and attractions across Newfoundland and Labrador.
Visitor information centres engage over 200,000 visitors every year, providing information and advice to travellers on local festivals and events, attractions and experiences and directions to hidden gems, located throughout the province.
In 2017, a record breaking 553,000 travellers visited Newfoundland and Labrador.
Support for Regional Visitor Information Centres delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.
Quote
“As we work towards our goal of $1.6 billion in resident and non-resident visitor spending by 2020, our tourism partners all across the province play a valuable role in assisting, promoting and guiding visitors around Newfoundland and Labrador. Part of this strategy, highlighted in The Way Forward’s Provincial Tourism Product Development Plan, is to improve our sense of arrival throughout key touchpoints along the visitor journey. As government aims to increase the number of high quality Newfoundland and Labrador tourism experiences, we do so to attract more visitors, encouraging them to stay longer and experience more.”
