Driver’s Licence and Vehicle Registration Renewal Reminders to be Issued through Email

In an effort to reduce costs and waste in the province’s landfills without impacting frontline services, the Motor Registration Division (MRD) will begin issuing driver’s licence and vehicle registration renewal reminders via email. As of April 30, 2018, these items will no longer be sent out through regular mail.

Given email will now be used as the primary means of reminding clients about renewals, it is important that clients register their email addresses with MRD. Online registration is available at gov.nl.ca/servicenl/renewals and, once registered, clients will be sent an email reminder in plenty of time to renew their driver’s licence or vehicle registration.

The expiry date for driver’s licences is printed on the front of a licence and is aligned with the driver’s date of birth. Vehicle registrations expire at the end of the month that is printed on the licence plate sticker. To assist the public in adjusting to a paperless approach and serve as a reminder to individuals who do not have email accounts, the Motor Registration Division can align the vehicle renewal date with the owner’s month of birth as well, rather than the date of vehicle purchase. Furthermore, individuals who do not have an email account can have their renewal reminders emailed to a trusted family member or friend.

Residents are also reminded that there is a discount for renewing driver’s licences and vehicle registrations online.

This initiative supports The Way Forward objective of providing better services to the people of the province, and the transition from a paper-based application culture to a digital-by-design model.

Quote
“Enhancing the efficiency of government services is an important objective for our government. Going paperless is another example of how we continue to enhance service delivery, reduce costs to the people of the province and reduce waste, all at the same time. This initiative builds upon a number of other service improvements we have made to the Motor Registration Division over the past two years.”
Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh
Minister of Service NL
