The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Incinerator Road Scrap Metal Processing Initiative – Resubmission                     (Reg. 1953)
Proponent: Newco Metal and Auto Recycling Ltd.

The proponent proposes to upgrade its metal recycling facility located on Incinerator Road in St. John’s. The upgrades will include secondary processing of recycled metals to significantly reduce the physical volumes of material it handles while increasing the resale value of its recovered material. Upgrades will include construction of a large concrete pad with associated drainage control (oil/metal/sediment separator), placement of a self-contained automobile depollution unit, installation of a metal shredding unit, and the installation of a non-ferrous processing plant. The project was registered as 1947 which was withdrawn on March 28, 2018. The revised project description includes additional operational details and a description of extra land needed for the project. The project is scheduled to commence in May of 2018.

The undertaking was registered on March 28, 2018; the deadline for public comments is May 3, 2018; and the minister’s decision is due by May 12, 2018.

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Northern Arm Forage and Pastureland Development                                 (Reg. 1941)
Proponent: Sunshine Investments Inc.

The project is released subject to the following conditions:

  • The total area for this project has been reduced to 40.38 hectares. This reduction was necessary to avoid disturbing pre-commercial thinned areas. For further information, please contact the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources at (709) 637-2353.   • The proponent must avoid land clearing activities during the breeding, nesting and rearing periods for migratory birds (April 15 to August 15 annually).
