February 6, 2018

The Department of Health and Community Services today announced that an external review of the Central Regional Health Authority will be conducted. The review is a result of concerns brought forward to the department about the governance and management of the health authority. Minister Haggie will be available to discuss the review with media today at 10:30 a.m. in front of the House of Assembly.

The review will be completed by Dr. Peter Vaughan. Dr. Vaughan is a recognized health administrator and the former Deputy Minister of the Department of Health and Wellness in Nova Scotia. Terms of Reference are under development. Areas of focus will include governance, senior management and clinical management.

Dr. Vaughan will meet with the regional health authority’s CEO and Board Chair in the coming weeks to seek input on the review. A work plan and schedule will be developed and submitted to the department for approval. The cost of the review will be determined based on the final work plan.

The review will begin in the coming weeks and will be conducted over the next two months. This review is particular to Central Health and concerns raised in this region only. The department does not intend to complete similar reviews on the other regional health authorities.

Quote
“The purpose of the review is to ensure we have a cohesive regional health authority that is working for the benefit of the people it serves. Central Health provides numerous services and supports for people living in the central region. I am concerned by what I have heard and I want to know that it is working as it should.”
Honourable John Haggie
Minister of Health and Community Services
