Public Advisory: Motorists Warned to be Aware of Caribou on Northern Peninsula Roads

May 24, 2018

The motoring public on the Northern Peninsula are asked to exercise caution when travelling in the area between St. Anthony Airport to Eddies Cove along Route 430, and from St. Anthony Airport to Main Brook along the Hare Bay Road.

A significant portion of the St. Anthony caribou herd overwintered north of Route 430. At this time of year the herd returns to its spring and summer ranges, making them increasingly vulnerable to motorized traffic as they are required to cross these roads at various locations. The herd’s presence is expected on or near the road over the next few weeks.

Motorists are asked to remain vigilant and reduce speed, particularly at night, when travelling along this section of the highway where there is an increased potential for encounters.
