Provincial Government Wishes Filipino Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a Happy Independence Day

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, wishes Filipino Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a happy Independence Day.

Independence Day in the Philippines, or Araw ng Kasarinlan, is also known as the Day of Freedom and is observed on June 12. It commemorates the Philippines’ independence from Spain. This day is celebrated by Filipinos around the world with flag-raisings, parades, fireworks, and time with family and friends.

Filipino Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will gather at 8 a.m. at St. John’s City Hall on Sunday, June 10, to raise the flag of the Philippines and enjoy traditional refreshments.

In February 2018, the Provincial Government released the first annual Diversity Calendar, meeting a key commitment in the Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador to publicly acknowledge cultural holidays and events.

This initiative delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation and deliver better services and better outcomes for residents. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at thewayforward.gov.nl.ca.
