Minister Crocker Announces Snow Plow Tracking Service, New Plows

Today, the Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Transportation and Works, unveiled a new snow plow tracking service that will help motorists plan for safer trips on highways throughout the province.

The new plow tracking service, Provincial Plow Tracker, available on the departments Driving Conditions website at roads.gov.nl.ca, lets residents track snow clearing equipment to see their current position and where they have been.

The service is currently available for the Avalon Peninsula and routes with overnight snow clearing and will be expanded to additional depots throughout the province this winter.

The department has also replaced 16 snow plows in its provincial fleet of 303 flyers, 26 graders, and 137 loaders. This new equipment is in addition to the tow plow announced in November that removes snow and applies salt on two lanes at the same time.

The new plow tracker service is one of a number of tools that help motorists plan for safe trips, including highway cameras at 31 locations, daily road conditions reports, Snow Means Slow public announcements, and driving conditions on the departments Twitter account, @TW_GovNL, using the #nltraffic hashtag.

Quotes
The plow tracking website helps give people a clearer understanding of what to expect on our highways and to make better decisions before travelling. However, we remind all motorists that the best way to stay safe while driving during the wintertime is to slow down and drive to conditions.
Honourable Steve Crocker
Minister of Transportation and Works
