Provincial Government Waiving Replacement Fee for Defective Licence Plates
The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Service NL, announced today that the department will waive fees for a peeling licence plate regardless of the age of the plate. In addition, any customer who paid for a replacement for a peeling plate since March 2017 will receive a rebate in the coming weeks.
Minister Trimper has given full support to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles to use his authority to replace licence plates without a fee when it is determined that the plate is unreadable because of a manufacturing defect.
Anyone whose licence plate is peeling should return it to their nearest Motor Registration Division location for a free replacement.
Quote
“In recent days I have heard concerns from individuals who had to pay a fee to replace licence plates that were defective. These plates do not meet the high standards set by Service NL or Motor Registration Division. I have made the decision, in conjunction with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, to waive this replacement fee and to ensure that all those who have paid for these plates in recent weeks will get their money back. We will also work with the manufacturer to determine a solution for this issue going forward.”
