Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, has announced the following event relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT REQUIRED:

Placentia Bay Atlantic Salmon Aquaculture Project (Reg. 1834)
Proponent: Grieg NL Nurseries Ltd. and Grieg NL Seafarms Ltd.

The minister has advised the proponent that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is required for this project. Additional information on the project and baseline information requirements will have to address, but are not limited to: a description of the present environment that may be affected by the undertaking; the effects that may be caused to the environment by the undertaking; proposed mitigations; alternatives to the undertaking; a proposed program to monitor potential harmful effects that may result from the undertaking; and a public information session.

An Environmental Assessment Committee will be appointed to provide scientific and technical advice to the minister and to prepare draft guidelines for conducting the EIS. The public will be invited to provide comment on the draft guidelines.

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:

Labrador West Sand and Gravel Quarry (Reg. 1923)
Proponent: Allard Distributing Ltd

The project is released subject to the following condition:

  • A Water Management Plan for the quarry must be approved by the Water Resources Management Division of the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment prior to the start of construction.

Salt Pond Quarry (Reg. 1926)
Proponent: B.D.C. Construction

The project is released subject to the following condition:

  • A Water Management Plan for the quarry must be approved by the Water Resources Management Division of the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment prior to commencing any work related to this project. Please contact the division at 709-729-2295 for further information.
