New Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment Better Positioned to Support Sustainable Communities

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment has been established to position the Provincial Government to work more effectively with communities and the Federal Government to achieve environmental standards and promote safe and sustainable communities while continuing to maintain strong environmental protection programs and policies.

“Protecting and enhancing the province’s environment is integral to safe and sustainable communities. In turn, it fosters economic and community development by ensuring communities are attractive places to work, live and visit. With environmental issues taking on greater importance, it is important that we respond accordingly. Through the creation of this new department, we will continue with our strong environmental protection mandate and enhance our collaboration with local governments to achieve better outcomes.”
- The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment

This organizational structure is consistent with a proven approach used in other Atlantic provinces to advance areas of common interest that the Provincial Government and local governments share regarding environmental protection. This includes waste management, clean and safe drinking water, and federal wastewater effluent regulations.

Combining these functions in one department also provides an opportunity for more collaboration with environmental experts on the prioritization of infrastructure, technologies, and initiatives related to water, wastewater and waste management which have such a profound impact on communities and their residents.

“In addition to creating a flatter, more efficient Provincial Government, this new department further highlights our government’s steadfast support of local governments as they advance programs and services to residents and businesses. By working collaboratively, we can ensure our communities are the best possible places to live.”
- Minister Joyce

Websites, as well as documentation for the department, will be changed to reflect the new department name.
