Local Veteran Honoured with Official Naming of Carbonear Long-Term Care Home

The Provincial Government today announced that the new long-term care home in Carbonear will be called the Pte Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion.

The Pte Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion honours the life of the 19-year old local veteran who was killed at Gallipoli in 1915. The suggestion to name the home after Pte Squibb was from the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 23.

Along with the unveiling of the new name, the Provincial Government also announced that the remaining 28 beds will become available at the facility. The department has provided the necessary funding to Eastern Health to open the beds as soon as possible. Eastern Health has started this process.

Opened last fall, the Pte Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion is a four-story, 228-bed residence that includes space for bariatric care, recreation therapy, complex care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and spiritual care. There are also services for dementia patients, including a modern protective care unit, wander guard unit and a dementia garden.

Quotes
“I am honoured to name the Carbonear long-term care home after such a brave young man. When the First World War came calling, Pte Squibb signed up early and he died far too soon. I am also pleased to open 28 additional spaces in the home. This means more people can stay close to home and closer to their families when they have to enter long-term care.”
Honourable John Haggie
Minister of Health and Community Services

“I would like to thank the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 23 for their submission to name the Carbonear long-term care facility after First World War Veteran Pte Josiah Squibb. We will remember his sacrifice for years to come through this memorial. I am also very happy to join in the announcement to open 28 long-term care beds in our district. This additional capacity will ensure local residents receive the care they deserve closer to home.”

“As part of Eastern Health’s commitment to long-term care residents, we strive to provide them with a warm and welcoming environment that they can proudly call home. With the opening of these additional beds, we look forward to welcoming more residents to the facility. Eastern Health is pleased for the facility to be named after this heroic young man and it will serve as a tribute to the contributions and sacrifices of Pte Squibb and all Newfoundland and Labrador’s veterans for years to come.”
