Minister Crocker Supports Communities in Twillingate Area in the Wake of Shrimp Resource Decline

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, is standing with communities in the Twillingate area – and all fishing communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador – as the provincial fishing industry weathers challenges associated with declines in shrimp resources.

As part of that process, the Provincial Government is taking action to assist displaced plant workers in the Twillingate area. Minister Crocker and Lewisporte-Twillingate MHA Derek Bennett will meet with representatives of Notre Dame Seafoods today to learn its plans for its shrimp plant in Twillingate. The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources will also reach out to the Town of Twillingate and the local Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW-Unifor).

Support will be made available for displaced workers of the Notre Dame Seafoods shrimp plant in Twillingate under the Integrated Transition Framework for Displaced Plant Workers. The multi-departmental program exists to respond to communities and individuals impacted by fish plant closures. It provides one-time transitional employment assistance and offers participants access to transitional counselling services to better prepare for future employment opportunities.

Quote
"I want to assure affected workers and their families that we support them in these challenging times. We are working diligently to provide assistance for affected plant workers in the short term, and we will continue to work to develop longer-term, transitional solutions for our industry as a whole as we respond to changing fish resources and other challenges. As recently as this Monday, I met with the federal minister and the Newfoundland and Labrador caucus in Ottawa to discuss immediate and longer-term solutions as the fishery transitions to groundfish. We will provide updates to those affected as soon as they become available."
Honourable Steve Crocker
Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources
