The following statement was issued today by the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs Secretariat:

Premier Ball Offers Condolences on Passing of Mayor John Hickey

I, along with my colleagues in the House of Assembly, was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mayor John Hickey late on December 14.

John was known as a fighter in politics. His determination, drive and political savvy at both the municipal and provincial level served the residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and all of Labrador well during his tenure in public life.

Today, the province lost a man who worked tirelessly for the people of Labrador in many capacities; councilor, deputy mayor, mayor, President of the Combined Councils of Labrador, MHA for Lake Melville, and as a former Minister of Transportation and Works and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs. We are all indebted to John for his many years of public service.

John was well known for his straightforward approach on tough issues, and he never backed away from a challenge. I enjoyed my conversation with John just after his election this fall and his excitement for the future of the community was contagious.

Out of respect for John Hickey’s tremendous service, flags will be placed at half-mast at the Confederation Building and at government offices in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and will remain so until his burial.

John will be missed by his municipal colleagues and by colleagues past and present in the House of Assembly. Today, we mourn the passing of a great Newfoundlander and Labradorian.  On behalf of all residents, I offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends and to all residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
