Provincial Government Announces Support for Enactus Teams

The Provincial Government is providing a combined investment of approximately $28,000 to support Enactus teams from Memorial University and the College of the North Atlantic (St. John’s campus) to travel to the Enactus World Cup taking place from September 26-28, in London, England.

Enactus is an international organization for post-secondary students with the goal to create and implement community empowerment projects. Memorial University Enactus has been recognized as the best in Canada nine times, and won the Enactus World Cup in 2008 and 2016. Along with teams from 40 other countries, Memorial will once again represent Canada on the world stage. Students from Enactus College of the North Atlantic - St John's will also attend as part of the Team Canada delegation. There are over 60 Enactus teams in Canada and more than 1,700 worldwide.

The Memorial University of Newfoundland Enactus team is enjoying much success with Project Sucseed, which focuses on addressing food security issues in Northern Canada. The Enactus team worked with botanists and engineers to develop a low-cost, environmentally friendly and efficient hydroponic growing system to produce high-quality, affordable fruits and vegetables year-round. Project Sucseed employs at-risk youth to build the systems, and a recent partnership with Tim Horton’s restaurants provides a mini-system to every elementary school in Canada. To date, the project has resulted in more than 500 hydroponic systems sold.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador remains committed to supporting entrepreneurship and innovation in the province. The Way Forward: A Vision for Sustainability and Growth in Newfoundland and Labrador outlines the Provincial Government’s commitment to a new Business Innovation Agenda, which will be released in the coming weeks.
