Premier Ball Announces 2018 Winter Games Host Community
The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, was in the western region of the province on Saturday, April 1, to announce the Town of Deer Lake as host community for the 2018 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games.
Established in 1976, and held every two years alternating between winter and summer, the games provide a competitive sport experience and support a pathway for athletes aspiring to represent the province at a national level. Approximately 1,600 athletes and coaches participate with athletes ranging in age from 11 to 18 years.
The Provincial Government supports the games through policy guidance, managing the hosting bid process and providing financial assistance. This year's host, the Town of Deer Lake, will receive $200,000 to assist with operating costs.
This initiative complements commitments outlined in The Way Forward: A Vision for Sustainability and Growth in Newfoundland and Labrador regarding the promotion of healthy living among youth. The vision guides Provincial Government actions to achieve greater efficiency, strengthen the province's economic foundation, enhance services and improve outcomes to promote a healthy and prosperous province.
