Celebrating the Official Opening of CBS Elementary School
A ceremony was held today to mark the official opening of CBS Elementary, a K-7 school located in Conception Bay South. The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, was joined by Tony Stack CEO/Director of Education for the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, school administration and members of the community.
CBS Elementary is a two-story facility that can accommodate more than 600 students, with current enrollment at 458. The school includes 32 classrooms, a gymnasium, library resource centre with IT room, science lab, computer lab, two music rooms, lunch/multipurpose room and a commercial kitchen.
The school was built in accordance with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, which incorporates environmentally-friendly initiatives that enhance both the learning environment and landscape of the entire site. The school is fully ventilated with air conditioning available in specific locations. A HVAC system is included, as well as energy efficient lighting to maximize LEED credits. Waste reduction, daylighting, and water conservation are among other LEED-influenced design features. The total investment in the school was approximately $24 million.
