Ministers Kirby and Haggie join Gander Elementary in Celebrating Official Opening

Teachers, staff and students today celebrated the official opening of the new Gander Elementary School. The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, toured the new school today with the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services and MHA for Gander. They were joined by representatives of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District and members of the community.

Gander Elementary School can accommodate approximately 450 students and enrolment for this September was 420. The school includes 25 classrooms, special education facilities, a gymnasium, a stage, a learning resource centre, two music rooms, a multi-purpose lunch room and a commercial kitchen, among other spaces. The total investment in the new school was $22 million.

Budget 2017 included considerable investment in new and ongoing supports for education and educational environments. The department is currently developing an Education Action Plan that will help inform decisions for Budget 2018 and the future of education in our province.

The Provincial Government is committed to building an educational community that fosters safe, caring and inclusive learning environments for all children and youth.

“New modern learning environments are important as we continue to meet the educational needs of students and families in Newfoundland and Labrador. Gander Elementary School is one of seven new schools that has opened this year. I want to thank everyone who has helped make this school a reality and I wish all the students, teachers and staff great success in the coming school years.”
Honourable Dale Kirby
Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development

“The new Gander Elementary School is a tremendous facility that the entire school community can be proud of. School enrollment has been steadily growing and the addition of this new school will address capacity concerns for many parents and families in the Town of Gander. It is wonderful to see everyone enjoying the new school and I was proud to be a part of today’s celebration.”
Honourable John Haggie
Minister of Health and Community Services and MHA for Gander
