Minister Kirby Welcomes Students, Educators and Administrative Staff Back to School

Today is the first official day of classes for more than 66,000 students attending Kindergarten to Grade 12 across Newfoundland and Labrador. The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, is welcoming all students, educators and staff back to school.

A total of 216 schools are open for the 2017-18 school year including four new schools, in Conception Bay South, Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s, Gander and St. John’s. Holy Cross will also be re-opening for high school students with the Conseil scolaire francophone provincial de Terre-Neuve.

Budget 2017 included considerable investments in new and ongoing supports for education and educational environments. Also, as a result of the July release of the Premier’s Task Force on Improving Educational Outcomes, the department is moving forward on its Education Action Plan that will help inform decisions for Budget 2018 and into the future.

The Provincial Government is committed to building an educational community that fosters safe, caring and inclusive learning environments for all children and youth.

Quote
“It is a pleasure to welcome our students, educators and administrative staff back to school for the 2017-18 academic year. Today is an exciting day for students, parents and teachers and I encourage each student to have a successful year and strive for their best academically. In addition, I remind all motorists that they should watch for children around school zones, obey speed limits and stop for school buses that will be picking up and dropping off children on their way to and from school.”
Honourable Dale Kirby
Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development
