Minister Kirby Announces Appointment of Associate Deputy Minister to Oversee the Development of Education Action Plan

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, today announced that Eldred Barnes has been appointed as Associate Deputy Minister in the department.

Mr. Barnes will oversee the development of the Education Action Plan and begin serving in the role of Associate Deputy Minister on September 5. A biography can be found in the backgrounder below.

BACKGROUNDER

Biography of Eldred Barnes
Eldred Barnes has almost 40 years of experience in education in Newfoundland and Labrador. He has been a teacher in both rural and urban schools, a school administrator, a district level program specialist, a Department of Education curriculum development specialist, and a university-level instructor. Mr. Barnes has held senior management positions with the Provincial Government with roles and responsibilities in corporate planning and research, strategic planning, and program development. He was lead on the implementation of the recommendations from the 2000 Ministerial Panel on Education.

Mr. Barnes has worked in Indigenous education and has been involved in interdepartmental program development related to comprehensive school health and wellness. He has extensive knowledge of the Newfoundland and Labrador school system.

For the past six years, Mr. Barnes has served as Executive Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of School System Administrators. Mr. Barnes holds Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, and Masters of Education degrees from Memorial University.
