Working Together on Climate Change

Public Consultations to Inform Climate Change Action

Today, the Provincial Government released the results of its public consultations on climate change. As part of The Way Forward, the information and commentary gathered through these consultations will inform the development of a provincial Climate Change Action Plan.

“The Provincial Government is committed to developing an approach to taking further action on climate change that is informed by public engagement and takes into consideration the insights of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. We received valuable feedback from the consultations, and I extend a sincere thank you to everyone who took the time to make a contribution to inform next steps. What we heard will help us develop a plan for our province to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change.”
- The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Climate Change

Eleven in-person and virtual consultation sessions took place from July to September 2016 and involved over 200 participants; in addition, the Department of Environment and Climate Change received 43 written submissions and over 1,000 individual comments. A Summary of Input from Climate Change Consultations can be found by visiting:

Over the coming months, the Provincial Government will develop an action plan that considers the input from the consultations, as well as other ideas and suggestions received including the outcome of discussions with the Federal Government and other provincial and territorial governments related to a Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change. It is expected that the new plan will be ready for public release in fall 2017.

“Climate change is a shared challenge that requires governments, businesses, industries, communities and individuals to all play a role. Our government is working toward reducing provincial greenhouse gas emissions to 10 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020. We have already taken key steps and have committed to increased action to close the gap to this target.”
- Minister Trimper
