Submissions for Accessible Taxi Program Grants Now Being Accepted

To support the inclusiveness and accessibility of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Government is inviting applications for its Accessible Taxi Program. Through this program, taxi operators are able to improve the accessibility of their vehicle fleet.

The Accessible Taxi Program will provide two grants of up to $25,000 each in 2017-18 to individuals, companies or agencies that are able to commit to delivering an accessible taxi service on a 24/7 basis.

Grants will be provided to successful candidates to assist with costs of retrofitting a taxi vehicle to meet accessibility standards or to assist with the purchase of a new taxi vehicle which can accommodate passengers with mobility devices such as wheelchairs and scooters. Grant recipients will be selected based on who can best demonstrate local demand for an accessible taxi, along with their ability to provide such a service. The deadline for applications is 4:00 p.m., September 21, 2017.

More information on the Accessible Taxi Program, including program guidelines, is available upon request at 709-729-6048, toll-free 1-888-729-6279, TTY 1-709-729-5000 or toll-free TTY 1-888-729-5440, or text 709-725-6344. Information and guidelines are available in alternate formats upon request.

“Through the Accessible Taxi Program, our government continues to remove barriers and support inclusion throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This program has been very successful to date and accessible taxi services are continuing to grow throughout the province. Having accessible transportation is essential to participate fully in society, and this program enables even more taxi companies to provide a broader range of transportation options.”
Honourable Lisa Dempster
Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities

“Accessible taxi services promote full participation in society. Being able to call on transportation at a moment's notice, for an appointment or to meet friends, for example, supports and encourages inclusion at all levels."
