Team Newfoundland and Labrador Celebrate Medal Win at 2017 Canada Games

Team Newfoundland and Labrador has reached the podium at the 2017 Canada Summer Games with wrestler Angel Hiltz-Morrell capturing a silver medal in the women’s wrestling 84-kilogram division on Friday, August 11, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was also named flagbearer for Team Newfoundland and Labrador for the closing ceremonies held on Sunday, August 13.

Fifteen-year old Angel Hiltz-Morrell, coached by Noel Strapp, wrestles with the Roncalli High School Wrestling Club in her home town of Avondale. Prior to the 2017 Canada Games, Ms. Hiltz-Morrell won the gold medal in every wrestling competition she entered over the last three seasons, most recently winning gold at the 2017 Provincial and Atlantic championships. A multi-sport athlete, she is also a member of the provincial rugby team.

The first games were held in 1967 in Quebec City and Newfoundland and Labrador has been represented at every event since. Newfoundland and Labrador hosted the 1977 Canada Summer Games in St. John's and the 1999 Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook. The Canada Summer Games will return to the province in 2025.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Canada Games.
