Team Newfoundland and Labrador Competing at Canada Summer Games

Nearly 400 athletes, volunteer coaches, managers and mission staff, as part of Team Newfoundland and Labrador, are on their way to Winnipeg, Manitoba, to represent the province at the 2017 Canada Summer Games, taking place July 28 - August 13.

During the first week (July 28 - August 4), participants will compete in athletics, men’s baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, beach volleyball, diving, rowing, sailing, triathlon, women’s soccer and men’s softball. Week two (August 6-13) will see competitions in road cycling, golf, men’s soccer, women’s softball, swimming, tennis, volleyball and wrestling.

Derek Bennett, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, will attend several of the events throughout the games.

The development of elite athletes in Newfoundland and Labrador is supported through funding for Canada Games teams, National Championship Travel Subsidy program and the Athletic Excellence Fund, which includes the Premier's Athletic Awards, the Elite Athlete Assistance Program, the Team Gushue Awards and Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarships.

The first games were held in 1967 in Quebec City and Newfoundland and Labrador has been represented at every event since. Newfoundland and Labrador hosted the 1977 Canada Summer Games in St. John's and the 1999 Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook. The Canada Summer Games will return to the province in 2025.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Canada Games.

Our government is committed to healthy living, sport and recreation and continues to invest in programs that support healthy active living in youth, which includes our commitment to helping prepare athletes from Newfoundland and Labrador for the Canada Games. I would like to thank the volunteer coaches, managers and mission staff who so graciously volunteer their time to help prepare and advance these athletes. Best of luck at the games.”
