Supporting Social Enterprise Development

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today released a summary of the key areas discussed during an engagement process to support social enterprise development in Newfoundland and Labrador.

As committed in The Way Forward: Realizing Our Potential, the Provincial Government is working to increase the number of social enterprises in Newfoundland and Labrador and to enhance services for existing social enterprises. Work continues on the development of a Social Enterprise Action Plan. Social enterprises are operating in sectors such as tourism, construction, the arts, culture, fisheries, homecare, and social housing. These enterprises create employment, reduce poverty, develop entrepreneurial skills, and successfully operate in all regions of the province.

To inform the action plan, engagement sessions were completed as well as a public online questionnaire. During this process, the Provincial Government heard views and perspectives from individuals and organizations about the direction government should take to support social enterprise development. The document summarizes the input gathered during the engagement process. The ideas and suggestions expressed will guide the new action plan.

The summary can be found at

“Supporting social enterprise development is vital for advancing development opportunities that benefit the economy, support sustainability, tackle social and economic issues, and encourage entrepreneurial models. Our government recognizes the innovative efforts of existing social enterprises and we are committed to promoting the creation of new social enterprises, further supporting existing social enterprises and ensuring the province gains social and economic benefits as a result. I thank those who provided valuable input through these engagement sessions and I look forward to continued partnership with organizations and stakeholders as we work collaboratively to advance social enterprise development in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
