The Rooms Selected as Finalist for Governor General’s History Award

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, has selected the exhibition Beaumont-Hamel and the Trail of the Caribou: Newfoundlanders and Labradorians at War and at Home 1914-1949 as one of three finalists for this year’s Excellence in Museums: The History Alive! Award.

The exhibition documents and explores the effects of the First World War on this province – on those who fought, on the families and communities left behind, and on the politics, economy and future of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Beaumont-Hamel and the Trail of the Caribou: Newfoundlanders and Labradorians at War and at Home 1914-1949 is a 5,600 square foot interactive exhibition which covers the progress, triumphs and tragedies of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in Europe. It also examines the experience of the Royal Naval Reserve and the Mercantile Marine on the water, and the sacrifices and contributions made on the home front, including by the Women’s Patriotic Association.

The Governor General’s History Awards recognizes innovative projects and excellence in teaching Canadian History. The awards, established in 1996, were created to recognize the many ways in which history is taught and communicated by Canadians.

Quotes
“Beaumont-Hamel and the Trail of the Caribou: Newfoundlanders and Labradorians at War and at Home 1914-1949 chronicles one of the most formative events in the history of our province. I commend The Rooms as it pays homage to those who fought so bravely for our rights and freedoms, and encourage everyone to view the exhibition, so we ensure the stories of these courageous men and women are never forgotten.”
Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore
Minister Responsible for The Rooms Corporation

“It is an honour for The Rooms to have been selected as a finalist for this award. For me, a major indicator of the success of this exhibition is the fact that the story of the Newfoundland Regiment at Beaumont-Hamel – a story so important to us here – is now known well beyond our provincial borders. In 2016, it became a national story through commemorative activities which included the opening of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Gallery and the Beaumont-Hamel and the Trail of the Caribou exhibition. Today’s recognition further cements this story’s place in the nation’s history. ”
