Provincial Government Continues to Support Women’s Film Festival

The Provincial Government has provided a combined investment of $85,000 for this year’s St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival including support for the Interactive Film Forum.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will attend the festival’s 28th annual opening gala tonight (Wednesday, October 18) at Scotiabank Theatre, St. John’s. The opening film is titled Suck it Up.

The St. John’s Women’s Film Festival is one of the longest running women’s film festivals in the world. It attracts over 4,000 participants and receives almost 500 film submissions annually.

Since 1997, the total production activity in Newfoundland and Labrador has been over $350 million, which has leveraged over $250 million in new money in the province.

“The St. John's International Women's Film Festival is celebrating its 28th annual festival, which would not have been possible without the continued financial support of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. We are incredibly grateful to the province for investing in our film and interactive industries, and for supporting the substantial economic and cultural impact caused by this rich industry. We are proud to have the Provincial Government stand by us and for their commitment to sharing the diverse stories, perspectives and talents of women filmmakers both locally and internationally."
