Minister Mitchelmore Recognizes 50^th Anniversary of St. John’s Arts and Culture

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today congratulated the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre (St. John’s ACC) on its 50^th anniversary.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s traditional landscape has been cultivated through song, music, dance and theatre, and the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre continues to play an integral role in sustaining, preserving and enhancing this unique cultural identity.

The St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre has become a valuable resource for creators, performers, and community organizations, with many notable performances having taken place over the last 50 years. For more than 20 years, St. John’s ACC has worked with Rising Tide Theatre, Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers, The Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, St. John’s Players, TADA Entertainment, Peter MacDonald, Kittiwake Dance Theatre with The Nutcracker, and the Shallaway Youth Choir.

As part of the 50th anniversary weekend, the St. John’s ACC will present a reading of the re-written script of Tomorrow Will Be Sunday, by Des Walsh. Based on the novel by Harold Horwood, and originally written by Tom Cahill, this was the first production on the St. John’s Main Stage in 1967.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s cultural sector is a significant part of our province’s economy. Arts and heritage are helping to build vibrant communities and regions throughout the province and contribute significantly to the province’s tourism product. Through The Way Forward, our Government will engage arts, heritage and tourism stakeholders to launch a renewed plan for culture.
