Provincial Government Acknowledges Entertainer John White

As the City of St. John’s prepares on June 25 to commemorate legendary entertainer John White with a plaque at Bannerman Park, the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today joined the city in expressing his respect and gratitude towards Mr. White’s contribution to the music and culture of the province.

John White played a key role in conveying and introducing Newfoundland and Labrador’s traditional music, lifestyle and culture to Canada, particularly during a time when our province was new to Confederation. His leading role on the nationally broadcast variety show ‘All around the Circle’ influenced a generation of future musicians throughout the province, and displayed a traditional style of song, laughter and ability to a national stage.

His face and voice are instantly recognizable to many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and the Provincial Government proudly acknowledges Mr. White’s contribution to the music and culture of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Quote
“John White made a lasting and positive contribution to our province. An accomplished entertainer, he is fondly remembered in many homes throughout Newfoundland and Labrador for his distinguished Irish tenor-type voice and style. It is fitting Mr. White will be honoured at the site of the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival, an event dear to his heart.”
