Provincial Government Amends Field of Study Requirement for the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced an amendment to the field of study requirement for international graduates of eligible post-secondary institutions who apply to become permanent residents through the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP).

International graduates who have completed their studies in one of Newfoundland and Labrador’s public post-secondary institutions may now apply to the NLPNP if they are employed in a position that requires an equivalent education level, training and experience. Previously, applicants were required to exclusively work in their field of study in order to be eligible to apply to the NLPNP.

This amendment allows more applicants graduating from Newfoundland and Labrador public post-secondary institutions to be eligible for the NLPNP, complementing recently announced pilot programs to provide international students and graduates with work placements, helping them secure gainful employment, and expand their professional networks, and remain in the province. During public engagement, international students and graduates identified this change to the field of study requirement as a priority.

Expanding NLPNP eligibility also supports the Provincial Government’s commitment in The Way Forward: A Vision of Sustainability and Growth for Newfoundland and Labrador to increase immigration to 1,700 newcomers annually by 2022.

Quote
“Newcomers enhance the social and cultural vibrancy of our province and support economic growth. Making these changes demonstrates our commitment to working with international students and graduates to ensure the program is responsive and supportive to individuals who wish to permanently settle in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Honourable Al Hawkins
Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour
