Minister Wishes Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a Happy Yalda
The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, wishes all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians celebrating Yalda a happy and blessed holiday.
Yalda is an ancient festival that marks the longest and darkest night of the year, during which families and friends gather to share foods and recite poetry, often until dawn.
Yalda is widely celebrated by Iranians, Azeris, Afghans, Tajiks, Kurds, and others.
The festival begins this evening (Wednesday, December 20) and ends on the evening of Thursday, December 21.
In The Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Government committed to publicly acknowledge cultural holidays and events. Recognizing these celebrations increases awareness of diversity in the province and helps newcomers feel welcome in their communities.
Quote
“The ancient celebration of Yalda is one of family, culture, and community. All of us can recognize the joy of gathering with loved ones to pass a fun-filled evening safe from the cold and dark. I wish all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who are celebrating this evening a wonderful Yalda.”
