Minister Hawkins Provides Update on Labour Dispute

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, has received the report of the independent mediator John Roil, QC, who was appointed on October 27 to help facilitate a resolution to the labour dispute between DJ Composites and Unifor Local 597. The report is being reviewed and has been provided to both parties with the intent to make it available to the public once they have had an opportunity to review.

Conciliation services had been provided by the department since August 2016. In an additional effort to resolve the dispute, an independent mediator was engaged by the department and both parties were urged to make a determined effort to bring an end to the dispute.

On November 10, Mr. Roil advised that a settlement had not been achieved and an extension to the filing of the report was granted at the request of the parties. The mediator’s report has now been provided to the minister.

Quote
“It is unfortunate that a resolution has not been reached and the dispute continues. With the submission of the report, Mr. Roil’s appointment has concluded. We will continue to monitor the situation, maintaining contact with both parties. They have been advised that the services of the department remain available should they wish to avail of them.”
