Minister Hawkins Joins Sikh Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in Recognizing Guru Nanak Dev Ji

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, joins Sikh Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in recognizing Guru Nanak Dev Ji, founder of the Sikh religion.

Guru Nanak’s teachings emphasize the values of love, compassion, and service to the community and humanity as a whole. Members of the Sikh faith believe in the importance of efforts to achieve true unity, equality, and social justice.

According to the Sikh calendar, this year the anniversary of Guru Nanak’s birth will be celebrated tomorrow (Saturday, November 4).

The Provincial Government’s efforts to publicly recognize diverse cultural holidays and events began with a commitment made in The Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador, and are intended to increase awareness of diversity in this province, and help newcomers feel welcome in their communities.

Quote
“On behalf of the Provincial Government, I wish all Sikh Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a joyous celebration as they reflect on the life and teachings of Guru Nanak.”
