Minister Hawkins Wishes Jewish Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a Happy Rosh Hashanah

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, wishes all Jewish Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a happy Rosh Hashanah.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and is generally a time of prayer for a peaceful and prosperous year ahead. Families gather to hear the blowing of a special ram’s horn trumpet called the Shofar, a symbolic call for them to reflect on any wrongdoings over the past year and seek forgiveness. The holiday also features merriment and celebration, including festive meals and sweet delicacies shared with loved ones.

Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the Days of Awe and begins this evening, ending on Friday, September 22.

In The Way Forward on Immigration in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Government committed to publicly acknowledge cultural holidays and events. Recognizing these celebrations increases awareness of diversity in this province and helps newcomers feel welcome in their communities.
