Public Advisory: Removal of Former Placentia Lift Bridge to Temporarily Increase Tidal Flow Activity

The Department of Transportation and Works advises mariners that a temporary infill of a portion of the channel is taking place at Placentia to facilitate removal of the former lift bridge. As a result, mariners navigating through the gut will experience an increase in tidal flow. All fill materials placed in the channel will be removed upon the completion of the demolition work.

Demolition of the former bridge will require lifting and construction activity above the channel. To avoid hazards associated with this overhead work, mariners are asked to communicate all movements through the channel with the bridge operators and to use caution when navigating in the area of the bridge.

To facilitate the bridge removal, the channel will be closed as of November 21 for approximately one month to all navigation requiring the bridge to lift. Motorists will not be impacted.

Further advisories to keep mariners informed will be issued as the demolition work progresses.

The department thanks mariners for their cooperation and apologizes for any inconvenience this closure may cause.
