Strengthening the Province's Transportation System
Minister Hawkins Meets with Heavy Civil Association to Discuss Road Work Improvements
The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, recently met with members of the Heavy Civil Association of Newfoundland and Labrador to discuss improvements to road work in advance of the 2017 construction season.
"Collaborating and partnering with industry provides us with the opportunity to engage the majority
of companies involved in road construction throughout the province. Input from partner organizations
such as the Heavy Civil Association helps inform the decisions we make on behalf of the people of the
province to determine the most efficient and effective use of our resources. Investments in public
infrastructure and ongoing partnerships and collaboration drive future long-term economic growth and
promote and enhance a safe and reliable transportation system."
- The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works
Some of the key priorities discussed at the meeting include:
- Establishing more regular communication with the association and its members.
- Multi-year planning and early road work tendering.
- Ensuring road work is completed within the project year.
- Improvements to procurement of road tenders.
"As the association that represents members of the heavy civil construction industry, our board was
keen to meet with the minister to discuss the department's priorities. Working collaboratively we
can establish goals that benefit government, industry and the end user. This ongoing dialogue will
allow industry to better prepare for the upcoming construction season."
