Supporting Transportation Infrastructure and Economic Growth

Various Road Work Projects Progressing Throughout Eastern and Avalon Regions

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, today highlighted the many maintenance and rehabilitation projects progressing this year throughout the Avalon and Eastern regions of the province.

�Despite extremely challenging financial circumstances for the province, our government recognizes the importance of building a reliable road network and allocated $62 million this year for the Provincial Roads Program. Under the program, significant road work is being conducted in communities throughout the Eastern and Avalon regions, which is important to the overall economic growth of the province.�

Under the Provincial Roads Program the following projects have been completed, or are in the process of being completed:

  • Route 1, Trans-Canada Highway � replacement of Thorburn Lake railway overpass and improvements to Thorburn Lake intersection;
  • Route 1, Trans-Canada Highway � reconstruction, milling and repaving of various sections of highway on the Outer Ring Road;
  • Route 1, Trans-Canada Highway � milling and repaving of various sections of highway between Whitbourne and Goobies;
  • Route 10, Southern Shore Highway � La Manche River bridge replacement;
  • Route 60, Manuals River Bridge to Foxtrap Access Road � storm sewer maintenance;
  • Route 63, Avondale Access Road � remove and repave two sections and construct connecting road between Lawrence Pond and Andrews Road, Conception Bay South;
  • Route 70, Conception Bay North Highway � rehabilitation of Harbour Grace Riverhead bridge and Bannerman Brook bridge;
  • Route 80, Trinity Road South � Sibley�s Cove bridge replacement and South Dildo bridge replacement;
  • Route 100, Cape Shore Highway � remove deteriorated pavement and lay fresh pavement on five sections totaling approximately 4.5 km between St. Bride�s and Branch;
  • Route 100-17, Point Lance Road � remove deteriorated pavement and lay fresh pavement of approximately 10 km;
  • Route 210, Burin Peninsula Highway � replacement of Clam Brook bridge and associated road work;
  • Route 210, Burin Peninsula Highway � replacement of North Habour bridge 2 and associated work on Route 210-11 in North Harbour;
  • Routes 210, 211, 211-10 and 212 � various culvert replacements at Burin Peninsula Highway, English Harbour East Road, Terrenceville Road, Bay L�Argent Road and near Harbour Mille;
  • Route 220, Burin Peninsula Highway � replacement of culvert at Snooks Brook near Point May;
  • Route 220, Burin Peninsula Highway � upgrade and repave 3.5 km from Lamaline towards Point May;
  • Route 230A � upgrade and resurface 4.3 km from George�s Brook to Route 230 intersection near Clarenville airstrip; and
  • Route 233 � rehabilitation of Port Blandford Causeway Bridge.

In addition to these projects, 23 projects in the Eastern and Avalon region are continuing from last year. The full list of road projects for the province for the 2016-17 construction season can be found at www.tw.gov.nl.ca/TenderingandContracts/

  • Over 40 road maintenance and rehabilitation projects will take place throughout the Avalon and Eastern regions this construction season.
