Increasing Safety for Residents
Safety Paramount When Driving in Construction Zones
The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, and Jim Organ, Executive Director of the Heavy Civil Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (HCANL), are reminding motorists of the importance of being aware and cautious when driving in construction zones.
"During the summer and fall months our roadways are busy with people travelling throughout the province. Our main priority is safety - the safety of those working in construction zones, as well as drivers and passengers. Motorists are reminded to please slow down in these areas, pay attention to signage and avoid driving distractions such as cell phones, to ensure their own safety and the safety of those working to improve highway conditions."
- The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works
Department of Transportation and Works and HCANL are partnering through online advertising to remind motorists that road construction season is at its peak on the provinces roads and highways.
"We remind drivers to please be aware of crews working in highway construction zones throughout the province. Our crews are working to ensure our highways are safe for drivers, so motorists need to make it safe for them."
- Jim Organ, Executive Director, Heavy Civil Association of Newfoundland and Labrador
Motorists are asked to approach construction zones with caution, obey the signs, slow down and follow directions. While construction activity may appear limited or inactive, signage remaining in place indicates work is ongoing.
Daily construction slowdown updates are available online at the Department of Transportation and Works website: www.roads.gov.nl.ca. Delays can be expected during construction season and the department thanks motorists for their patience.
