Supporting Transportation Infrastructure and Economic Growth

Minister Outlines Western Region Road Work for 2016-17 Construction Season

Several road maintenance and rehabilitation projects are in progress or nearing completion throughout the western region this construction season. The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, is on the west coast this week visiting several projects with area Members of the House of Assembly.

The new projects were identified and selected based on criteria such as safety, condition, class, economic impact, preventive value and bundling opportunities. Under the $62 million Provincial Roads Program, as announced in Budget 2016, the following projects are underway or will begin in the coming days:

  • Route 470, La Poile Highway - culvert replacement from Rose Blanche to Harbour Le Cou, Diamond Cove, IIse aux Morts, Fox Roost, Margaree and Burnt Islands
  • Route 490, Stephenville Access Road - culvert replacement from Stephenville Access Road to Stephenville Crossing
  • Route 440, Ballam Bridge to McIvers - road maintenance
  • Route 450, Frenchman's Cove to York Harbour - road maintenance
  • Route 463, Port au Port Peninsula - road repair
  • Route 480, Burgeo Highway - culvert replacement, Southwest Brook to Burgeo
  • Route 440, Christopher's Cove - repair area landslide
  • Route 440, near Cox's Cove - road repair
  • Route 440, McIvers - preventative road maintenance
  • Route 420, White Bay South Highway - culvert replacement
  • Top Pond Bridge, Burgeo Highway - bridge rehabilitation

In addition, a tender valued at just over $319,000 was recently awarded to NCL Contractors Ltd. for maintenance of Conche Road from Roddickton to Conche. The work will get underway prior to the beginning of the school year and will help ensure improved driving conditions while the department determines a more permanent upgrade to the road.
