Building Safe and Modern Learning Communities

Contract Awarded for Construction of New Virginia Park Elementary

A contract valued at just over $6.9 million has been awarded to Magna Contracting and Management Inc. for completion of the new Virginia Park Elementary in St. John's. The new school is being constructed adjacent to the existing Virginia Park Elementary.

"Our government is pleased to be moving forward with this important project. Extensive work has been done to ensure a safe and healthy environment for students, teachers and the entire school community. This school is an example of quality infrastructure development that our government is committed to advancing for future generations of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."
- The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works

Based on input from the project's environmental consultant, Pinchin LeBlanc, further environmental sampling at the site of the new school was conducted over the past number of months. This was a necessary step in the project. All environmental requirements are being met.

The new school will include 17 classrooms, a gymnasium and stage, a library resource centre, music room, lunch/multi-purpose room, commercial kitchen and a family resource centre, among other spaces.

"Virginia Park Elementary is one of several new schools in the province nearing the final phases of construction. I know the school community is looking forward to its completion and we all appreciate their patience as we get closer to the school being ready for students and teachers. This new facility will provide a modern learning experience for students while still maintaining the school spirit that binds this community together."
- The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Education

The new school is on schedule to open in late fall 2017 as anticipated.

"I believe the students of our community deserve a state-of-the-art facility and I am encouraged that the new school is scheduled for a 2017 completion date. Education is an investment in our future. It will be a highlight of my first term in the House of Assembly to take part in the official opening of the new school, as a legacy to school-aged children in the area."
- Bernard Davis, MHA, Virginia Waters-Pleasantville

The Provincial Government is committed to providing an educational environment that prepares students for lifelong learning and future academic and career opportunities.
