Building a Transportation Network to Support Economic Growth

Federal and Provincial Governments Issue Tender for TCH Improvements in Central Newfoundland and Labrador

Through a cost-shared funding agreement between the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Canada, a tender has been called for rehabilitation of the Trans-Canada Highway between Route 340 at Lewisporte Junction to Route 360 at Bay d'Espoir Junction.

"Our government is pleased to partner with the Government of Canada on this important rehabilitation project between the communities of Norris Arm and Bishop Falls. This is a busy stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway with traffic volumes between 4,000 and 6,000 vehicles per day, and it is a link for the central region of our province to the larger communities of Grand Falls-Windsor and Gander. Development of our transportation network through projects such as this supports rural communities and economic development within the province."
- The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador

The scope of work for rehabilitation of the TCH between Route 340 at Lewisporte Junction and Route 360 at Bay d'Espoir Junction includes:

  • Repairing rutted areas with asphalt milling and repaving;
  • Resurfacing asphalt; and
  • Replacement or rehabilitation of crossing drainage structure, primarily small culverts.

"The Government of Canada is committed to working with our provincial, territorial and municipal partners to ensure Canada's road transportation network is safe, modern and efficient. The rehabilitation of this key section of the Trans-Canada Highway will help connect local communities and encourage economic development while making driving safer and more comfortable for residents and travellers."
- Scott Simms, Member of Parliament for Coast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame,
On behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

The last major upgrade to the Trans-Canada Highway in the area of Lewisporte Junction and Bay d'Espoir Junction was in 1994.
