Public Advisory: Update Provided on Repairs to MV Veteran
Technicians with Damen Shipyards and Rolls Royce have completed an inspection and assessment of the mechanical issue with the port thruster of the MV Veteran. Necessary parts for the repairs will arrive the first week of May and repairs are anticipated to take three to four weeks to complete. In addition, Rolls Royce Finland is exploring potential modifications to prevent further issues with the thruster. An update on when the vessel will be ready to return to service will be provided as this work and the repairs progress.
The vessel was relocated to St. John's following the mechanical failure of the port thruster.
Throughout the inspection and repair work, Damen and Rolls Royce are also working to determine the root cause of the failure of the thruster.
Service to Fogo Island and Change Islands is currently being provided by the MV Beaumont Hamel. Work is now underway to carry out repairs to the MV Capt. Earl W. Winsor and have the vessel recertified for service. It is anticipated this work will be completed by mid-May at which time the Winsor will relieve the MV Beaumont Hamel until the Veteran returns to service.
The Department of Transportation and Works apologizes for the disruption in the service of the MV Veteran.
The department continues to hold Damen Shipyards and Rolls Royce accountable to deliver a vessel that provides the reliability and sustainability that the department contracted for and is ensuring necessary actions are being taken to secure the operation of the vessel when it returns to service.
