Media Advisory: Minister Hawkins to Help Launch Grand Falls-Windsor Seniors Wellness Hub

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, will help officially launch an online Seniors Wellness Hub tomorrow (Friday, February 19) at the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor Council Chambers. The event begins at 9:30 a.m.

The Seniors Wellness Hub, a project of the Grand Falls-Windsor Age-Friendly Steering Committee, comprises nine videos with information of key interest to seniors, their families and caregivers. Each video features a local expert speaking to issues such as vision loss, home care, finances, caregiving, healthy eating, and more. More videos are expected to be added over time. The project was supported, in part, through a $5,000 grant from the Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development.

In September 2006, Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers Responsible for Seniors endorsed the Age-Friendly Rural/Remote Communities Initiative. Grand Falls-Windsor is one of 45 communities in Newfoundland and Labrador currently involved in the program. The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor Age-Friendly Steering Committee was formed in 2010 in partnership with Central Health, the Exploits Valley YMCA, the Exploits Valley 50 Plus Club, and the Friendly 50 Plus Club.
