Healthy Living Grants Support Community Wellness
The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, today announced a total of $736,263 has been provided to 108 community-based organizations through the latest round of applications approved under the Community Healthy Living Fund.
The Community Healthy Living Fund supports communities, community-based groups, recreation committees and organizations in their efforts to increase wellness. It is important that we work together government and community groups to provide the environments and opportunities for people to pursue a healthy, active lifestyle.
-The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development
Community Healthy Living Fund grants are awarded four times a year and applications are considered on a continuous basis. Grants support a wide range of healthy living and recreation initiatives and activities under three categories: Capacity Building, Programs, and Supportive Environments. The latest Community Healthy Living Fund recipients can be viewed in the backgrounder below.
The Exploits Valley Cross-country Ski Club is one organization that recently received a total of $23,000 from the fund. The club is a not-for-profit, community-based organization which partners with the Town of Grand-Falls Windsor and Special Olympics to offer recreational cross-country skiing and snowshoeing programs/events in the area.
The Supportive Environments component of the Community Healthy Living Fund helped us to purchase a grooming machine for our ski trails, and the programs category is supporting our ongoing efforts to offer healthy, recreational winter activities for residents and visitors of all ages, and all skill levels. And its certainly working. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing have grown very popular in this area since the revitalization of the club in 2011, with club membership from the Grand Falls-Windsor area increasing from 24 to more than 300 in the past four years alone.
- Dana Pittman, President, Exploits Valley Cross-country Ski Club
The Community Healthy Living Fund replaced the former Seniors Recreation Grant Program, the Provincial Health and Wellness Grant Program, the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Organization Grant Program, the Community Recreation Support Program (including the Community Capital Grant Program, Physical Activity Equipment Grant Program and the Community Recreation Development Grant Program). The total funding amount available for community grants remained the same.
All organizations eligible for funding under previous programs are eligible to apply under the Community Healthy Living Fund.
