Raising Awareness to Protect Consumers

Minister Advises Consumers to Know Retailers' Policies Before Buying

Awareness plays an important role in consumer protection and all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are encouraged to be informed when completing their holiday shopping or contributing to charities.

"The Provincial Government recognizes that consumers are under tremendous financial pressure at this time of year. I urge shoppers to pay attention to retailers' refund and return policies, whether they are shopping in person or online, and to always be careful about sharing their personal information."
- The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Service NL

Consumers are reminded that a retailer's regular return or refund policy may not apply to online purchases or may be modified during the busy holiday season. Knowing retailers' policies in advance will give purchasers valuable information so they can make informed buying decisions.

Exercising diligence is also important when giving to charity. If you are unsure about the intentions of someone who is seeking donations, contact the charity directly for advice, or do some research online to determine if the charity is reputable.

Consumers who have questions about their rights should contact the Consumer Affairs Division of Service NL at 1-877-968-2600 or by email at consumeraffairs@gov.nl.ca.
