Public Advisory: Adjustments to Vital Statistics Services in the Event of a Disruption at Canada Post

Service NL advises that adjustments will be made to vital statistics service delivery in the event of a disruption in postal service.

Should an individual need to apply for a birth, death or marriage certificate during a Canada Post service disruption, applications can be made by:

  • Submitting an application in person at a regional office;
  • Submitting an application online and waiting for the Canada Post service disruption to conclude; or
  • Submitting an application online and arranging courier pickup of the certificate from the nearest regional office.

Applicants can have a person pick up a certificate on their behalf, provided that person has a letter of authorization signed by the applicant, and proper identification when presenting themselves at a regional office.

Should a person have an urgent need for a certificate, he or she can indicate this on the application form or letter. Service NL will make every effort to meet standard turnaround time for certificate applications; however the postal service disruption may cause additional delays.

Should anyone request a certificate just prior to a disruption at Canada Post and not receive the requested certificate within the expected timeframe, he or she should contact a Service NL office to check on the status of the request.

Service NL will continue to maintain secure operations in the event of a Canada Post service disruption. The department will be providing specific instructions to any parties handling registrations and certificates to ensure that confidentiality and privacy of information is maintained.
