Collaborating Nationally on Energy and Mines Policy

Minister Highlights Public Geoscience in Mining and Diverse Sources of Energy

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, attended the Energy and Mines Ministers' Conference in Winnipeg, August 22 to 23, to discuss strengthening of public confidence in natural resource sectors. During the event Minister Coady spoke on energy and mines issues important to Newfoundland and Labrador including the development of diverse sources of energy generation, investment in public geoscience in mining and energy transmission.

"This week's meeting of energy and mines ministers was an important opportunity to have discussions with my colleagues across the country, share best practices, and determine how we can collaborate. I spoke about our work in reducing diesel consumption in communities isolated from the primary power grid, including coastal regions of Labrador. In mining, I focused on public geoscience and how we provide junior mining companies and other stakeholders with data and advice that will ultimately encourage them to invest in the development of the province's resources. Nationally, we have tremendous knowledge in policy and regulation and we will continue to work together with our federal, provincial and territorial partners to enhance public confidence in Canada's natural resource sectors."

Over the course of the conference, ministers discussed issues such as current opportunities and challenges related to building confidence in energy development; clean technology and innovation; junior mining sector support and best practices for managing mining environmental liability; energy collaboration and energy efficiency; and the regulatory environment and best practices.
