The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources:

Minister Commemorates Anniversary of Cougar Flight 491 Tragedy

I rise today in this Honourable House to remember the Cougar Flight 491 tragedy which happened seven years ago on March 12, 2009.

I, along with fellow members of this House, offer my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the 17 victims who were taken from us far too soon as a result of the crash.

Mr. Speaker, such a tragic event reminds us of the harsh environment and conditions faced everyday by the women and men working in our offshore.

Government and our partners have made major progress on implementing the Wells Report recommendations‎ and we will continue to improve regulations.‎ Safety must always be the first priority of industry and government.

Mr. Speaker, we understand the risks and the dangers associated with working in the offshore and we are working to ensure everyone is provided with the safest working conditions possible. Thank you.
