Enhancing Safety for Residents
Provincial Government and Insurance Bureau of Canada Announce Continuation of the Alarmed and Ready Fire Safety Campaign
The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, today joined Amanda Dean, Vice President Atlantic, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), and representatives of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services (NLAFS) and the Holyrood Volunteer Fire Department, to announce the fifth phase of the Alarmed and Ready Fire Safety Campaign.
"The Alarmed and Ready Campaign has been a highly successful partnership over the last four years, empowering local fire
departments to perform fire safety outreach armed with free smoke alarms and nine-volt batteries for residents. Smoke alarms
save lives, and on the cusp of Fire Prevention Week, the announcement of the fifth phase of this campaign will help sustain
important fire safety efforts into the future."
- The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs
The Alarmed and Ready Fire Safety Campaign was first launched in 2012 through funding from the Insurance Bureau of Canada. The fifth phase of the campaign includes an additional commitment of $15,000 from IBC, making its total investment $75,000 over the last five years.
"Our member companies are proud that IBC is sponsoring Alarmed and Ready for the fifth year. For insurers, partnering with
government to prevent fires and to save lives is a crucial community initiative that we are delighted to contribute toward."
- Amanda Dean, Vice-President Atlantic, Insurance Bureau of Canada
For the fifth phase, the Alarmed and Ready Campaign will focus on at-risk groups in the community, in particular young children and seniors. This will be accomplished by alarms and nine-volt batteries being distributed by local fire departments as a follow-up to Learn Not to Burn presentations in their communities. These items will also be distributed during presentations of the Seniors Fire and Falls Prevention Program, a Provincial Government-led public education program, delivered by local community groups throughout the province.
"The announcement of a fifth instalment of the Alarmed and Ready Campaign is tremendous news to our association and our
membership, and even more so for the communities and the people we serve. Fire safety is certainly one of the most important
initiatives fire departments undertake, and having the support of IBC and the Provincial Government in ensuring we have the
tools and resources necessary to carry out such important education outreach is truly appreciated by our association."
- Duane Antle, President, Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services
Since its inception, the Alarmed and Ready Campaign has resulted in firefighters visiting close to 16,000 homes in 240 communities and distributing approximately 6,000 smoke alarms and 4,000 nine-volt batteries.
